How to Make Soft and Delicious Gulab Jamun at Home

Few Indian desserts are as instantly recognisable as gulab jamun. Soft, golden-brown dumplings soaked in sweet, fragrant syrup make this dessert a favourite at festivals, family celebrations and special occasions.

The good news is that you don't always need to prepare the traditional dough from scratch. With a good gulab jamun instant mix, you can make this much-loved dessert at home with a simpler preparation process.

What You Need

For the gulab jamuns:

• Gulab jamun instant mix

• Water or milk as directed on the pack

• Oil or ghee for frying

For the sugar syrup:

• Sugar

• Water

• Cardamom, optional

• Rose water, optional

Step 1: Prepare the Mixture

Take the required quantity of gulab jamun instant mix in a bowl.

Add the recommended amount of liquid gradually and mix gently. Avoid overworking the mixture.

Allow the mixture to rest for a few minutes if the product instructions recommend it.

Step 2: Shape the Gulab Jamuns

Grease your hands lightly and take a small portion of the prepared mixture.

Roll it gently between your palms until you get a smooth, crack-free ball.

Try to keep the balls similar in size so they cook evenly.

Step 3: Prepare the Sugar Syrup

Add sugar and water to a pan and bring it to a gentle boil.

You can add a little cardamom for extra aroma. If you enjoy the traditional flavour, a small amount of rose water can also be added after preparing the syrup.

Keep the syrup warm.

Step 4: Fry the Gulab Jamuns

Heat oil or ghee on a medium-low flame.

Carefully place the prepared balls into the oil and fry them gently until they develop an even golden-brown colour.

Avoid using very high heat because the outside may brown quickly while the centre remains undercooked.

Step 5: Soak in Sugar Syrup

Once the gulab jamuns are fried, place them directly into the warm sugar syrup.

Allow them enough time to absorb the syrup and become soft and juicy.

Serving Ideas

Gulab jamuns can be served warm or at room temperature.

For an extra-special dessert, serve them with:

• Vanilla ice cream

• Chopped pistachios

• Almond flakes

• Saffron strands

• A little extra sugar syrup
